Manichithrathazhu is one of my favourite malayalam movie. Not only me, many malayalees have this film on their favourite list.But what about the films based on the same story ? I mean the remakes, do you think this remakes were the honest version of the orginal one ?
The ultimate goal of doing remakes is to make financial profit. A film which is already got critical acclamation and highly positive audience response have a good probability in remaking.In commercial aspect, it is a positive and healthy method to gain more financial stability.But as I mentioned in my last writeup, cinema is an art and a medium to communicate or convey something with people. The primary goal of filmmaking is to tell a story or ideas without losing it's aesthetic part.Is this primary goal met in remake films ? No, they are trying to make a coffin for the original story.
Remake isn't a necessary method to do a film.Once a story is told, it is told.And a remaking Postmortem is an insult to the orginal story.If you want to tell the same story to people in other language, you can give subtitles or you have an option to dub it. I know we have limitations in dubbing but if the story you want to tell have a universal appeal then you could convey it beautifully.As we know, film have a universal language, a language of humanity.And if your story have that language then you don't need to reshoot it according to the culture and characterisations of any state or country.
Remember, cinema is an entertainment for audience but an art for a maker.It's a filmmaker's decision whether they want to insult the identity of their film or not. I had told you in my last write up that every film have a soul.Yes, every film have an identity. I will tell you it with an example. I have my own name and identity and I can't change that when I go to Mumbai or Dubai or elsewhere I go. Instead, I should have the ability to communicate with every human mind around the globe.People from any corner of this earth could like me,understand the orginal me. Likewise,we should present the orginal identity of our film.Let the audience watch it in their perspective.
The greedy business investors can never understand the beauty and essence of making and watching a film.What they know and want to know is to build a castle with dollar.But I love the producers who enhance good stories. I am happy to say that today's malayalam cinema have good and creative bunch of producers.
